It's Your Health, Get IT And Keep It

Why would you choose to live your last years of life debilitated, unable to do the things you want; donating your retirement income to doctors and medical medical professionals? Of course no one consciously makes that choice. Nonetheless, you make that choice when you choose
to ignore the consequence of excess body fat and inadequate exercise. My job as a wellness coach/personal trainer to physician referred clients who are deconditioned and bearing medical issues goes well beyond just showing someone how to properly exercise.  My job is not simply to change their weight or the way they look and feel about themselves.  My job as a successful wellness coach/personal trainer is to help people change the way they live and the way they think about their health by teaching them  the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle and helping them plan their course.

I have a bit of an advantage gaining client interest in what I am saying. I work almost exclusively with clients who have been sent to me by their physician because they are already suffering the consequences of not following a healthy lifestyle.  With that advantage, day one with every new clients begins with a lesson on the damage that too much fat and too little exercise does to a persons immune system along with the encouragement that your bodies are very forgiving once you incorporate weight loss or, more precisely, fat loss and exercise into your lives.
   .
You have heard hundreds of times about the cardiac consequences of sedentary living and excess body fat. But no dire consequences happened last year or this year so you begin muttering, "Hooey, a lot of hyper-warning." That warning is not just a little guy crying wolf. Because the consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle present slowly, you are lulled into thinking, "Not me." Wake yourself. It will happen. I am going to repeat that: It will happen. You will develop some form of cardiovascular disease in direct consequence of having excess body fat. Maybe one in ten thousand is genetically blessed to avoid the consequence of excess body fat and an unhealthy lifestyle. You are not that person. Accept that and decide whether you would rather put your time and money into being well or into medical bills and a sick bed. It is going to one or the other. You will either invest your time and money in health or you will invest it in sickness.

I want to concentrate in this article on an often overlooked consequence of excess body fat; that is a compromised immune system. You have been given your immune system for a purpose.  When properly functioning, the immune system maintains your health by recognizing infectious agents and manufacturing B cells, T cells, NK cells etc. (antibodies) to destroy them.

When a person becomes obese, especially when they are carrying excess abdominal fat, low grade inflammation in the body is triggered.  Besides the contribution of the inflammation to atherosclerosis and a host of other diseases, the presence of this inflammation then triggers immune cell production and the ensuing autoimmune disorders many suffer.  To make matters all the worse, those with activated immune cells lose weight more slowly.

That is all bad news if you are carrying excess body fat.  The good news is that your body is forgiving.  Your body, has been designed to heal itself. There are, of course, instances when medical intervention is necessary but so well designed is the body for self-healing when provided with the opportunity that my primary care doctor once told me that 90% of medical practice was to make us feel better until our bodies could heal themselves. Some estimate that as high as 75% of all doctor visits are lifestyle related. Your body, given the opportunity, largely will heal the consequences of excess body fat. And where it cannot completely heal itself, the process of self-healing coupled with medical intervention will significantly reduce medical costs, improve life quality and add years of productive and enjoyable living with your immune systems functioning as it should. Research has shown that, with even a modest weight loss, there is a significant reduction in pro-inflammatory cells.

Healthy weight loss, a reduction in body fat without an accompanying loss of muscle, cannot be accomplished by diet alone. Those who lose weight by diet alone rarely keep the weight off. About 80% will regain the lost weight within a year. No doubt that is partly due to the fact that when you lose weight by diet alone about 25% of that weight loss is muscle. When you lose muscle, you lose metabolic activity so that, at the end of your weight loss program you return to 'normal' eating with a slower metabolism. The statistics are overwhelming that those who are successful at maintaining weight loss are those who incorporate regular exercise as a part of their lifestyle. Not only does the weight stay off, but with exercise, it comes off more quickly and easily.  When you combine a healthy diet with exercise, the success/failure statistics are about reversed and weight loss is body fat; not muscle. Approximately 80% of those who commit to six to eight hours a week of exercise will keep their weight off.

When you combine fat loss with the already proven positive effect that exercise has on the immune system, not only are you on your way to improved health but with the reduction of activated immune cells triggered by excess fat and the increased metabolic activity gained from exercise and improved muscle mass, weight loss and weight maintenance will come more easily.
